How Do You Find Which Book You Are Currently Reading on Kobo Clara

Expect at that, the volume I'm reading.

The first thing I thought upon picking up the Kobo Clara Hd was, "Wow this is crazy lightweight." Then I put it to slumber after loading the volume I'grand currently reading, and WTH??? The screen is the cover of the book I'yard reading! What? No stupid typewriter keys? No old fourth dimension-y pens arrayed to expect like a cracked screen? I mean, what? Not simply that, there's a little info bar you can activate to bear witness your progress on the book encompass you're seeing.

I know information technology'south a pocket-size affair, seeing the cover of the volume you're reading, but volume covers are

1. frequently pretty nice, why not showcase them.

2. A great conversation starter. Your ereader is laying at that place, letting people know what you're reading. As an author, I'll have all the marketing I can get :)

3. if given the choice of book cover or weird fountain pen caps, I know what I'd cull, every time.

Silos

I mean it's cool that Kindles are tied into Goodreads, merely I think I'k happy to trade that for seeing what I'k reading. I've reinstalled the Goodreads app on my telephone, then when I outset something new I'll accept to at some indicate open up the app and update my status. The ease of apply the Kindle/Goodreads connection offers is also part of the problem. Goodreads was a place for readers to collect, and notwithstanding is, but now information technology'due south more a place for kindle readers to collect. It'd be prissy if Kobo integrated (there is, surprisingly, an API) but I'm guessing there's a reason they don't.

Buying books is merely as seamless equally on amazon, and because Amazon is then aggressive with price matching, it'southward unlikely yous'll observe a volume on Kobo that costs more than it's counterpart on Amazon. A few minutes afterwards purchase it's on your device ready to be read.

Kobo, similar Amazon, appears to permit Publishers pick DRM or no. Kobo supports Adobe Digital Editions. Thankfully Calibre tin can strip that pointless crap with ease. It's actually easier to strip than Amazon's propriatary DRM schema. So that's a bonus.

I don't advocate pirating eBooks but advocate loudly that DRM is useless (Meet above) and harms the legitimate possessor of content more than information technology fifty-fifty slightly inconveniences pirates. Thankfully it's mostly the idiotic larger trad publishers that notwithstanding call up DRM makes sense, and I don't buy much of their stuff.

Kobo Abode screen

User Experience

Enjoyable is an understatement. I mean there's non a lot you can do on a modest eInk screen. You tin see it looks like to what Kindles offering.

It changes equally yous read things, updating reco's etc. You lot can sign into Pocket, which is nice since I tend to hoard things in Pocket, forgetting to open the desktop app, possibly I'll read more of my manufactures now LOL.

The screen is responsive and bright. The intelligent back lighting is dainty. I know more recent Kindles have this, my 2018 Paperwhite did non. Not only does it shift brightness but colour temperature.

My Progress in Annalee Newitz's 'Autonmous'

The other thing that's kinda cool and I'thou only just getting to dig into, is that you tin can see some neat graphs of your reading progress.

Library Direction

I like that on Device, the Kobo automatically has a "serial" view so I can view my books by series. The Author view isn't merely a list of all books, sorted by author proper noun like the Kindle (Unless I just never did information technology right). It'southward a view of author names with the number of books by that writer. So I tin can quickly go to Terry Brooks, then his books, for example.

Is my screen broken? No but fountain pen nibs…

Of course, in that location are also collections; I accept Scifi, Fantasy, Writing, Business organisation and Unread, as I did before, simply now I don't demand to have a Star Wars collection, considering I have the series view, too Star Trek, or the Frontiers Saga or Omega Force (which is sadly in Kindle Unlimited, so I'grand done with that until Joshua Dalzelle takes information technology broad. ).

I've mentioned Calibre in this and my last post, it'southward a great desktop tool for managing your ebook files. What's squeamish is it has drivers for Amazon and Kobo devices (it seems the Kobo stuff offers more/better integration than Amazon firmware) so you can manage and organize your library and then upload to your device. Collections and series data upload as well and so when you lot go to your device, everything is already sorted. With my Kindle information technology would all dump to the master screen then I'd have to sort into the proper collections. Add to that of course It'd yell at me that my side loaded books wouldn't sync.

Uploading to the Kobo has proven quite easy, I'1000 very happy then far with the experience.

Online Library Direction

The ane place where Kobo falls downwards is their online library. So long as y'all're ownership books on Amazon, you lot can assign them to a drove right from your account pages. It's non perfect and you tin can but do it once, but it's a groovy fashion to do initial sorting triage.

On kobo y'all run across all your books and tin archive them, that's it. No organisation of any type. You can download your books from that screen, and so that'south most its only real use.

In Conclusion

Information technology's been a week, I'm happy with my choice, I don't miss the Kindle, and while I'grand sure to miss out on stuff that is Kindle Unlimited but, that's just how it has to be. Thankfully my ebook library is thousands of books, many I've not yet read, and as many I'd read once again happily.
